Our Kent studio is a contemporary refurbishment of an existing double garage structure elevated on a prominent ridge overlooking the Weald of Kent with a view south extending 15 miles.
The building is clad with vertical wide cedar board cladding which has been left to weather naturally to blend in with the rural environment. For budgetary and sustainability reasons, the building retains and reuses the existing frame, slab and foundations of the existing structure.
The oak framed glazing was bespoke built by a local joiner. The building is highly insulated and heated using a wood burning stove with timber fuel sourced on site. The roof is planted with a combination of sedum and wild meadow annuals to encourage insects and wildlife. All of the furniture has been custom designed and is CNC cut from birch faced plywood and assembled on site.
The building is a case study into using different species of timbers for their most appropriate purposes – a softwood frame, oak flooring, oak framed glazing, western red cedar cladding and birch plywood interior furniture.
