A locally listed house designated a property of townscape merit in Woking, Surrey has been transformed into a 120 space day nursery for our client Fennies day nurseries.
The existing rooms of this imposing house have been carefully remodelled to retain the original architectural features internally and externally and to provide clean, safe and attractive nursery spaces.
The original central staircase and hallway are retained as a welcoming and impressive entrance space for the children and parents. The various nursery spaces are formed by connecting several rooms of the original house to create interlinked and secure nursery spaces.
A tired and unsympathetic 1960s styled flat roofed extension has been re-clad with charred timber cladding battens externally to provide a crisp contemporary upgrade, purposefully distinct in design from the historic property.
The playful positioning of window openings in the façade allow views at high and low level and a first floor terrace for babies to sleep out doors in the fresh air.
The large garden for the toddlers and pre-school children is generously landscaped with a variety of children’s play equipment, dens and exploring trails. A wild planted buffer zone provides acoustic and visual separation to neighbours and enhances the biodiversity of the site.
