The YMCA contacted us in 2013 to investigate a new inclusive sports facility for their Redhill site. The intention of the facility is to showcase paralympic sports such as Boccia and Goalball to encourage and maximise participation within the local community. The site has sensitive planning issues as it is located with the Metropolitan Green Belt.
Working closely with Reigate and Banstead Council, a case of “very special circumstances” has been made. The project received full planning approval in late 2013 and we are now working with the client to develop the design further for funding and in preparation of detail design through to construction.
We developed the building design to allow maximum flexibility in the design spatially so that it can be used for other means including exhibitions and conferences. Natural daylight and ventilation to the building, high thermal insulation and protection from solar gain and robust combined with natural materials internally and externally create a sustainable, durable, low maintenance and attractive addition to the YMCA’s complex.
